As women transition into menopause and up to a decade before, women have a significant and sometimes gradual decline in hormones which increase the risk of bone loss. Here are 6 tips to decrease your risk of bone loss AKA osteoporosis:
- Avoid tobacco smoke
- Don’t drink more than 2 alcoholic drinks per week
- Do weight bearing exercise (at least 3-4 times a week at least 30 min/session)
- Supplement vitamin d and calcium (1200mg/day of calcium/day and 600-10,000 IU/day, over 40% of Americans have vitamin d deficiency)
- Avoid steroids if possible (supplement and screen earlier if exposed)
- Replace testosterone and/or estrogen, when deficient if you are a candidate
It is imperative to prevent osteoporosis and decrease your risk of bone fractures! Osteoperosis can cause hip fractures, which increase the risk of death and loss of mobility, as well as a significant decline in quality of life. Let’s prevent osteoporosis so we can live well, age beautifully!
