I help women, my “Ageless Belles” struggling with weight gain, fatigue, and low sex drive improve their B3: beauty, balance, and belief through education and cutting-edge medicine (programs, media, speaking, blogs and books) so they can “live well, age beautifully.”  Let’s learn healthy behaviors to decrease our risk of osteoperosis!

’Women who experience moderate to severe hot flashes and night sweats during menopause tend to have lower bone mineral density and higher rates of hip fracture than peers who do not have menopausal symptoms, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.” https://www.endocrine.org/news-room/press-release-archives/2014/hot-flashes-linked-to-increased-risk-of-hip-fracture

As women transition into menopause and up to a decade before, women have a significant and sometimes gradual decline in hormones which increase the risk of bone loss.  Here are 6 tips to decrease your risk of bone loss AKA osteoporosis:

  1. Avoid tobacco smoke
  2. Don’t drink more than 2 alcoholic drinks per week
  3. Do weight bearing exercise (at least 3-4 times a week at least 30 min/session)
  4. Supplement vitamin d and calcium (1200mg/day of calcium/day and 600-10,000 IU/day, over 40% of Americans have vitamin d deficiency)
  5. Avoid steroids if possible (supplement and screen earlier if exposed)
  6. Replace testosterone and/or estrogen, when deficient if you are a candidate

It is imperative to prevent osteoporosis and decrease your risk of bone fractures! Osteoperosis can cause hip fractures, which increase the risk of death and loss of mobility, as well as a significant decline in quality of life.  Let’s prevent osteoporosis so we can live well, age beautifully!
